About a Project
Verso is a digital finance app that lets anyone manage money, carry a VISA card, top up, send funds, pay bills, and withdraw — entirely from their phone. Appening partnered with A'kiba Technologies to design and engineer the full product including the OneAfriq card-and-wallet integration, the mobile-money settlement flows, and the web-based admin console that ties them together. The result is a single platform where a verified user moves value between mobile-money accounts and the global card network through one simple, trusted interface.

Across much of Africa, money already lives on the phone — but it lives on the wrong rails. Mobile money pulled everyday payments out of cash, yet it sits in a walled garden, disconnected from the global card economy that online and point-of-sale commerce runs on. For millions of young people, that gap is the difference between having money and being able to use it.
- A mobile-money balance can't reach the card economy. Someone with funds in a mobile wallet still can't pay an online store or tap at a POS terminal that expects a VISA card.
- A card means a bank, and a bank means barriers. Traditional card issuance demands accounts, paperwork, and minimum balances that most young and first-time users can't clear — exclusion by default.
Left unsolved, the cost compounds. Without a trusted bridge between mobile money and cards, an entire generation stays locked out of digital commerce — with no card identity, no spending history, and no financial footprint to build credit, savings, or a business on.

Verso shipped to production on both Google Play and the App Store and has crossed 10,000+ downloads across Gabon and the CFA-franc zone — built to production standard, with KYC, admin-gated crediting, and end-to-end transaction traceability.
- Mobile money finally reaches the card economy. Every verified user now carries a VISA card linked to their wallet, so a mobile-money balance can pay online and at POS — with card payments priced at just 1%.
- A card without a bank account. Account creation, the VISA card itself, top-ups, transfers, and bill payments are all free; a phone number and basic details are enough to get verified and start spending.
- Every franc is traceable end to end. Admin-mediated settlement confirms funds have landed before any balance is credited, so top-ups and withdrawals are verified on both sides and the disputes that plague provider-to-provider transfers fall away.
- One app for all of everyday money. Users top up airtime and data, pay utilities and cable TV, split bills, send and request money, and sort every transaction across 13 spending categories — in a single place.
- A financial footprint to build on. Verified identity, an active card, and a categorized transaction history give previously-unbanked users the beginnings of a real financial profile.

Appening helps you reach business goals by applying Agile methodologies.
Money-Flow Architecture
Verso's core is a controlled, admin-mediated money flow that lets value cross safely between mobile-money rails and the card network. On top-up, a user moves funds from their Mobile Money Partner account to Verso's admin MMP account; only once receipt is confirmed does the admin credit the equivalent to the user's OneAfriq wallet through the distributor account. Withdrawals run the same path in reverse — from the user's card back to their mobile-money number.
Value-Add: A distributor-account reconciliation model with an admin settlement gate — every leg is verified-before-credit and dual-logged, bridging two financial systems that don't natively talk to each other while keeping a complete, traceable record on both ends.

OneAfriq Card
Once a user clears verification, Verso programmatically triggers card creation through OneAfriq, which acts as the card-issuing and wallet provider. A VISA card is generated and linked to the user's Verso account — issued under Verso's single distributor relationship rather than requiring each user to hold their own bank account. Card payments are priced at a flat 1%.
Value-Add: Banking-grade integration with a third-party issuer under a distributor model — card issuance is event-driven off KYC approval, and each user wallet is provisioned beneath one distributor account, abstracting regulated card operations away from the user entirely.

P2P Send & Request Money
Users send money directly from one OneAfriq wallet to another — fast, secure, and traceable, with no admin intervention required. They can also request money from friends and family and split shared bills, making everyday transfers between people effortless.
Value-Add: A direct wallet-to-wallet rail that deliberately bypasses the admin settlement layer for instant P2P — kept separate from the admin-mediated top-up and withdraw path so peer transfers stay real-time while cross-provider movement stays controlled.

QR & POS Payments
Verso supports paying with a QR code, extending the user's card and wallet to in-person, point-of-sale moments. POS payments also anchor the rewards engine — a referred user's first POS transaction is what unlocks the headline referral bonus.
Value-Add: A QR-driven POS payment flow wired into the same 1%-fee card rails and into the referral engine's first-transaction trigger.

Goals & Savings
Verso helps users plan ahead, turning vague intentions into trackable personal and business goals. Alongside everyday spending, users set targets and watch their progress — making saving feel deliberate rather than accidental.
Value-Add: A goal-tracking module layered over the transaction ledger, linking real balances and spending to forward-looking savings targets.

Expense Tracking
After any transaction, users can categorize it to keep spending organized and visible. Thirteen categories — Rent, Groceries, Dining, Travel, Goals, Education, Transport, Healthcare, Personal Care, Savings, Entertainment, Investments, and Others — turn a raw transaction list into an at-a-glance picture of where money goes.
Value-Add: Post-transaction categorization across 13 predefined categories, feeding the budgeting and expense views that give users daily control without manual spreadsheet work.
Referral & Rewards
Every user gets a unique referral code; when a new user signs up with it, the system links referrer and referee and grants 500 points to each. When that referee completes their first POS payment, both sides earn a further 4,500 points — issued exactly once. Points convert to CFA via a fixed formula, and balances are tracked from the user dashboard.
Value-Add: An event-driven points ledger triggered strictly on the first successful POS transaction, with one-time reward locks and post-signup relationship locking to prevent duplicate or fraudulent claims — every grant logged and adjustable from the admin panel.

Admin Panel
The web-based admin panel is the control layer between users, mobile-money partners, and OneAfriq. From it, operators review and approve verification documents, monitor every top-up and withdrawal request, manage OneAfriq distributor transactions, track MMP transfers, and resolve disputes and failed transactions — while maintaining the compliance and audit trail behind every fund movement.
Value-Add: A real-time operations console engineered as the system's source of truth — gating financial actions, reconciling multi-party transactions, and writing an audit log for every credit, payout, and reward.

KYC Verification
A user opens a free account with basic details, then uploads the required identity documents directly in the app. Those documents are stored securely and routed to the admin panel, where a reviewer manually approves them; only after approval is the user marked Verified — and only then can a card be issued. This keeps onboarding compliant and controlled.
Value-Add: A secure document-capture and storage pipeline feeding a verified-state machine that gates every downstream financial capability — compliance-first onboarding rather than open, automated account creation.

Because Verso moves value between two financial systems that don't natively connect, the architecture itself is the product. Our team designed a controlled, admin-mediated pipeline so every transaction is verified before value changes hands:
- Top-Up Flow: User MMP account → Verso admin MMP (funds received & confirmed) → OneAfriq distributor-wallet credit → user's Verso card / wallet balance.
- Send Flow: OneAfriq wallet → OneAfriq wallet — direct, real-time peer-to-peer, with no admin leg.
- Withdraw Flow: User's OneAfriq card → Verso admin distributor card → Verso admin MMP → user's MMP account, linked to their phone number.
- Control & Compliance Layer: The admin panel reconciles each leg, gates crediting on confirmed receipt, handles disputes and failures, and writes an audit trail across the full path.
The design deliberately limits automated fund movement — trading a little speed on cross-provider transfers for verified, traceable, dispute-resistant money flow.
Technology Stack
Verso pairs a lean cross-platform app and backend with a deliberately heavy financial-integration layer — the part of the stack that makes the money flow safe and traceable.
